We’re entering the final month of this year’s Get to Know Contest. That’s right… after 25 weeks inviting kids right across Canada and the United States to get outdoors and share their nature-inspired works of art, we only have 4 more weeks to go! So if you’ve been working on a masterpiece all summer or haven’t yet started, hurry up and be sure to get your entries in by November 1st for your chance to win and be celebrated!
This year's Get to Know Contest, ongoing until November 1st, is helping to unite U.S. and Canadian Teachers. The benefits of which are huge, teachers are sharing lessons, activities, and resources for a more transformative learning experience and helping to connect more youth with nature!
The Get to Know Contest is about celebrating each and every participant for getting outdoors and creating works of art inspired by nature. As such, each participant will have their work featured on the contest’s online Gallery and has a chance to win some incredible prizes from our partners. When the contest closes on November 1st however, contest judges will select their top favourite works (in all age brackets) to be published in the national 2014 Get to Know Contest Calendar. Just announced, these winning works will also be put on display in the Pepco Edison Place Gallery in Washington, DC!
With the help of the Canadian Wildlife Federation, last year’s Get to Know Contest helped to celebrate our wild neighbours of Rivers to Oceans! Youth were invited to submit an entry featuring a species that inhabits the ocean, lake, rivers, waterways… any body of water really! We were thrilled to provide one lucky winner and their family with an amazing whale watching trip on Vancouver Island. The winner of last years’ CWF Rivers to Oceans Gallery was Alexandria Swartz, age 13, of Toronto.
Participating in the Get to Know Contest has its rewards! In addition to the great benefits one already gets from being outdoors, which includes increased self-esteem, motivation to learn, problem-solving skills and social interaction with peers, the Get to Know Contest also awards some lucky youth with prizes!
The Get to Know Contest was celebrated on June 8th as part of Inside the Outdoors' World Oceans Day event in Irvine, California. Get to Know Youth Leader Robin Park was on site to enjoy the festivities and help spread the word about the Get to Know Contest, on now until November 1st, 2013.
The Get to Know Program is proud to support National Pollinator Week, June 17 to 23! As such, we’re encouraging youth across North America to learn about, get inspired by and help celebrate our incredible pollinating wild neighbours!
Between January 1 and April 7, the Get to Know Contest’s Entry portal was open and collecting nature inspired entries from youth across North America. After all, nature inspires us year-round so why not celebrate it every day of the year?! These Early Bird entries can be found within this year’s Contest Gallery and of all these amazing entries, 3 were selected as Early Bird Winners.
With our society’s becoming more urbanized, it’s no surprise that today’s youth learn a great deal about the environment through their city, rather than out in nature themselves. Therefore, we’re happy to announce that this year’s Get to Know Contest is getting some great city support! Several cities have officially accepted the Get to Know City Challenge and pledged to get their young citizens outdoors and participating!
Here at the Get to Know offices, the arrival of March means one big thing… err, maybe two. Firstly, Spring is just around the corner and with that more daylight hours and milder weather to be active outdoors, and two, the Get to Know Contest is now only a month away!
