Get to Know and Canada's First Peoples May 2, 2012 News
Get to Know has always sought to teach children about the importance of “connecting” with their neighbours of other species. Aboriginals (also known as Canada’s “First Peoples”), comprised of First Nations and Metis, have long been aware of the life-sustaining influence of the biosphere. They represent the fastest growing demographic in Canada, and Aboriginal youth number in the hundreds of thousands. Their sheer numbers make them worthy of a specific Get to Know focus; however, when coupled with the fact that they have a deep, intimate connection to their traditional territories and vast stores of often underutilized traditional ecological knowledge, a new Aboriginal focus becomes an obvious priority.
Currently, we are developing Bioblitzes and taking concerted measures to ensure greater Aboriginal participation in the Get to Know artistic contests.
If you are an Aboriginal organization and would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact us at info@gettoknow.ca. We would be happy to work with you to teach your membership about the wondrous flora and fauna within your traditional territory!
